The tough and exciting journey into 2019 EU-ECAMA student debates saw Malawi Assemblies of God University (MAGU) ousting Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) in a thrilling and tough encounter at Mkwichi Secondary School on Friday 20th September, 2019. The Debate was organized jointly by the European Delegation to Malawi and the Economic Association of Malawi (ECAMA).
The Debates are arranged in a knock out basis. It is in the inaugural round that MAGU defeated and knocked out LUANAR from the competition. This year’s debates theme is INCLUSIVE AND SUSTAINABLE ECONOMIC GROWTH. According to EU and ECAMA these debates are designed to encourage students and young people in general in shaping Malawi’s development agenda by allowing them to voice out what they deem as main development challenges and opportunities in the country.
Gracing the function was Team Leader of Economic, Trade and Governance from the EU Malawi Office, Mr. Jose Maria Medina Navarr, who was also invested the duty of announcing the winners of the day. Amongst the judges was a renowned economist and Governor of the Reserve Bank of Malawi Dr. Ellias Ngalande. The Judges scored point’s in line with a Judgement criteria which included; depth of research, presentation of facts, argument versatility and confidence. MAGU displayed quality and quantity of facts inline with the criteria and ended up being the victors of the day.
The Debates will take place across the country amongst universities both Public and Private and are expected to run for three months from September 2019 to November 2019. The Winners of the Debates will walk away with a cash price of MK 750000 and runners up, MK 500000. Other universities and colleges participating in this competition are: Blantyre International University (BIU), Chancellor College, Mzuzu University, The Catholic University of Malawi, The Malawi Polytechnic and the University of Livingstonia.
